Shiatsu Explained: How it diverges from Swedish / Deep Tissue





In the vast world of massage therapy and touch healing modalities, there are so many different styles to choose from. Swedish and Deep Tissue reign as popular choices that most people are familiar with. Each style offers its own unique benefits. Today I want to dive into Shiatsu and why I love it. We’ll explore its depths and how it is distinct in nature from Swedish and Deep Tissue. 


What exactly is Shiatsu??


Shiatsu is a style of massage that originates from Japan. Similar to Swedish and Deep Tissue, it focuses on the musculoskeletal system but also considers and prioritizes the subtle energetic body. When I work on people, I am using the Meridian System from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a roadmap for our exploration. The goal is to rebalance your Qi (energy life force), essential for human health and vitality. 


Essential Shiatsu Features


  • Precision Pressure: Think targeted pressure applied using palms, fists, thumbs, forearms and even knees, aimed at specific energy points.


  • Dynamic Stretching: Stretches including rotations, rockings and joint mobilizations enhancing flexibility and improving circulation. 


  • Breathwork: Breathwork techniques are often synchronized with movements, enhancing the depth, presence, and relaxation effect. 


Shiatsu vs Swedish Massage


Swedish massage is what most people envision when they think of a spa massage. Its known for its soothing ambiance and oil-lubricated, long strokes. It’s all about muscular relaxation and easing tension. Here’s what sets Shiatsu apart:


  • Techniques and Tools: While Swedish Massage glides, Shiatsu presses and holds. Focusing deeply on energy rather than just muscle. 


  • No oils, please: Shiatsu is typically performed fully clothed, with no oils, making it distinctly different in its approach and aesthetic. So you don’t need a shower before continuing with your day!


Shiatsu: A different kind of Deep


Deep Tissue is known for its intensity, designed to alleviate deep seated knots and chronic muscle tension. While Shiatsu shares the ‘deep’ aspect in terms of pressure potential and profound effects, the philosophy and execution are worlds apart: 

  • Holistic vs Problem Solving: Deep Tissue addresses specific physical complaints. Shiatsu considers the whole energetic system of the body. You will sink into an altered state of consciousness where your body’s natural intuitive healing capabilities come online. 


  • Deep Focus and Energetic Alignment: Deep Tissue focuses on specific areas of muscle and fascia with sustained pressure, Shiatsu, while still deep when necessary, focuses on aligning and harmonizing the flow of energy throughout the body.
